How to Meditate on Scripture

AEIOU Meditation Method

Christian meditation is about filling your mind with truths about God. It is not like Eastern meditation, which focuses on emptying your mind. This acronym is designed to give you a framework for mediating on Scripture.

For this exercise, we'll use Matthew 4:19 as an example:
”And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”“
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭4‬:‭19‬ ‭ESV‬

A - Ask questions

Think of any question you have about the scripture. This could be anything, maybe you can answer or maybe you can not. The goal is to get into the heart of what the text is saying.

Example:
Follow him where?
What does it mean to fish for men?
How does someone fish for men?
What will it cost me to follow him?

E - Emphasize words

Keep repeating the verse over and over, and each time you do emphasize a different word each time. Write down the revelations you get as you emphasize a different word each time.

Example:
FOLLOW me, and I will make you fishers of men.
Follow ME, and I will make you fishers of men.
Follow me, and I WILL make you fishers of men.
etc...

I - Illustrate

Draw a picture of what the verse means to you.

O - Other Scriptures

What else does the Bible say about this? What other scriptures come to your mind?

Example:
"Go and make disciples of all nations..." Matthew 28:19

U - Use

How can I apply the truths of this verse to my life?
